Day 33

Today was Australian culture day, which I was really excited for. Next week, we have World Traveler's week, which is all about culture and habitats. Sooo excited!!! I'm adventurous, enjoy traveling, and love life experiences. This will give me a chance to really share that interest with some of the kids. I had so much fun with the culture lesson on our last day of Australia week. My favorite part of the lesson was learning some aboriginal words and Australian slang.

A few aboriginal words:
wa' awa - river
nappoo - sleep
mayamaya - dog

Australian slang:
G'day mate. - Hello, friend.
bloke - a guy
Sheila - a woman
jumbuck - sheep

Today's zoo tour included the dinosaur exhibit.

The maze is always a fun time for the kids. Not much of a maze, but they still have fun.

We also fed the giraffes today. Kinda fun to get up close to the giraffes for a short time.

Amid culture lessons, we learned a little about the digeridoo, the popular Australian musical intstrument. So, for craft today we decorated paper towel rolls into digeridoos.

This afternoon, we did a second craft project - decorated some boomerangs. Then, since the kids were doing a pretty good job, we decided to let them go outside and play with their cardboard boomerangs. They obviously didn't come back to the thrower, like an authentic boomerang, but they still flew decently well like a frisbee.

One worker in guest services asked me today if I was having fun. So often, other employees ask me that as we walk by. It's as if they assume, I'm not having fun. haha Every day is a good day for me with this job. I think I might be the only crazy intern that enjoys it every single day. Yes there are bad moments on days, but in the end every day is a good day.

I sent an email to my high school biology teacher the other day checking in with him like I do every so often, and I told him how when I get up in the morning, I don't necessarily feel like I'm going to a job. I'm going to be with the kids at camp. His response was "You know you're headed into the right field when you start to feel guilty about getting paid for something that is fun to do." :-)
