Then, we stopped and visited the Magellan Penguins. Remember, these are not arctic penguins; they are warm water penguins from South America. This was the most active I think I've ever seen the penguins. Some of them looked like they were actually taking baths in the pool, cleaning themselves off.
Funny story about bathroom breaks, the wise guys that designed these bathrooms at the zoo where lots of kids come, little kids at that, did not put some soap dispensers down lower; so, every day I stand there and put soap on my hand for them to grab. Today, I was weird and took a few photos to help me remember this random part of my camp counselor experience at the Blank Park Zoo. We all know how much I love my photos. :-)
The animal presenter brought a Madagascar Hissing Cockroach and the Tiger Salamander today for the kids to see. I've held hissing cockroaches many a times back at Morningside through our Creature Outreach Program, which I've mentioned before in my blog. Then, we had our language lesson for the day for World Travelers week. We practiced some Inuit. The Eskimos are more formally known as the Inuit. Here's the words and phrases that we practiced:
- Kah-poong-ah – I am hungry.
- Ee-mick – fresh water
- Ee-mock – salt water
- Oo-voong-ah – I am cold.
- Ee-mah – Yes
- Nowk- No
- Now koot? – which way?
- To the right! – Owk!
- To the left! – Owka-a!
- Tah-koo! – Look!
I've come to know that sometimes it's easier to remember things when you have some sort of action that goes along with words. Then, when you read or hear that word you think of the action. So, during our Inuit lesson, I made sure we had an action for each word, and when I quizzed the kids most of them did a good job of remembering that you were supposed to nod your head yes, when I said "Ee-mah", shake your head no when I said "Nowk", point to something over there when I said "Tah-koo!", and rub your arms to warm up when I said, "Oo-voong-ah"... just to give you an idea of some of them. Noah earned extra bonus imaginary points today for being so good at remembering all of the actions right away as we practiced the words. I told him since he was so good at it that I would make a note sheet for him with all the words, so he could show his parents at home. Here's Noah pointing to the left for "Owka-a".
We had one camper regurgitate some of his food near the end of lunch. Nate ate too fast, and his mom told us he's done that before. No big deal, cleaned up and continued on. So, we started craft a little late today, but we made some big penguins. I really liked the smile that Abby put on hers:
Kaleb's penguin is on the left in this photo next to the one I made. He kept asking me where mine was, so he could make it almost just like it. Mighty fine job, my little friend :-)
We also did page 3 in our passports. Here's mine:
Matt, one of our full day campers this week told me, not once.... but twice, that he loves me today. :-) Here's our afternoon boys playing some Star Wars game they designed with the chess pieces. It's kind of cool to hear them talk about Star Wars, a classic.
The girls and I also worked on some coloring this afternoon. I'm the girl who asked for coloring books for Christmas when I was in college, thank you very much :-)
Kids are so inventive. Here, they just started playing some little game in the mirror and were keeping themselves entertained. I joined in after a bit.
I believe it was Samantha that colored this butterfly for me. I thought it was pretty cute how she spelled my name at the top "Jusca". I think I'll blame that on one of our zoo crew volunteers for saying my name more like "Jusca" than "Jessica" all of the time. hahaha We coworkers like to joke around sometimes for fun.
Oh, and before I forget. We are officially over half way through all our camps. *tear* I can't believe we've been doing camps for 4.5 weeks already, and I was here 3 weeks before that learning stuff and making lesson plans. Wow. Only 4.5 weeks left for me this summer here at the zoo.
