Can anyone say HEAT! I know I've heard it's going to be a scorcher all week, but I was already sweating bullets as parents checked in their campers this morning. Our kids didn't even want to walk outside. haha, but we have to... I mean we are at zoo camp. Alternating trips outside followed and water while sitting inside air conditioning isn't so bad...
Well today we start with the second round of camp themes. Only four weeks left. This week we are doing the Animobility camp. We have 18 new campers this week. Not full like we have been, but I'm really excited about this group. I think we're going to have a great week. They listened pretty well today and are pretty smart. So, we learned about legs and feet today, did some animal exercises, saw the ornate box turtle and corn snake with the animal presenter, and then took our group picture for the week.
Next, we fed the giraffes and walked along the African Boardwalk.
After lunch, we decorated bags for the week. This has kind of been our Monday craft every week, and it has worked out really well.
We had 6 full day campers today. We went and visited the new Australia exhibit with them.
This is a digeridoo for photo ops.
An enlarged emu egg for photos.
A kookaburra!
This photo spot allows you to be a Joey in the kangaroo's pouch.
Here you see if you can jump as far as a wallaby. Wallabies are what some call small versions of kangaroos. A wallaby can jump 25 feet. Long ways for such a little guy.
They can also jump 6 feet high. That's taller than me. That's what I call a vertical.
We also decorated a new tablecloth for our craft table this afternoon among a few other projects. I started drawing some animals by looking at coloring sheets I had. I can draw when you give me something to refer to...
Well, the heat didn't kill me yet. Just gonna keep sweating, but we can't let it stop us from visiting all the animals in the zoo. Here's to a good week and crossing my fingers that we won't have many 116 heat index days after this week. I may be naive, but I'm going to go with it :-)
Tonight, I listened in to my friend's radio show back at Morningside again. After he realized I was listening again, he pulled out another random animal story. Today, he read about a guy giving CPR to a bald eagle in Oregon. Then, he's on air reading off the telephone number and said it would be really cool if we could get someone to call in the next 20 seconds or so. "Ah crap, he means me doesn't he?" I thought, but I didn't write the number down. I'm about to go look it up on the website when he sends me an instant message, "Call!!!!" I said give me the number, and I called. He answered and said thanks for calling and that he wanted to test the line. haha. When, he asked if I wanted to go on air, I asked him, "well, what do you want me to say?" Said he didn't have time to write anything up. Well, anyways then he's saying "40 seconds", and I'm on. He said, "So calling us in from Des Moines. I really appreciate you listening in. Is it as hot there as it is here?" I replied, "Are you kidding me? It's blazing hot." haha. He also asked since I work at a zoo if I enjoyed the story about the eagle. "Sure did." I also told him I'd say "You rock, Sweet T". (sweet T is his radio name) Haha. Well there ya have it. I have officially been on the air live. Now time for some reading I suppose.
